I feel that the separate rooms for elderly patients create isolation for them, whereas in a ward there's staff viewing them and there's social interaction, be it other patients of their visitors, it can brighten up their stay. I understand infection issues and some like the privacy but it's seems like a hotel at times, everyone in own rooms and get room service so dine alone  too.
Now, the overall care was very good, but saw her meal -  an omelette with mashed potatoes and broccoli -  now doesn't present as a combination I would have and she didn't want potatoes and veg but while I was in the very nice cheerful young man came to ask her for her meal think next day she said yes to cheesy egg then said yes again for the potatoes and carrots, she is very deaf so I said loudly - do you want potatoes and carrots with your eggs? She immediately said -  no way, I can't eat that! So again no fault of the staff but I would say there's a huge amount of untouched food goes in bin and this is due to patients  saying yes cause don't hear or some are confused through illness .
I feel that you need to come up with better meal plans and there must be a lot of money going in the bin. Why not try and do a survey ask patients (who are able ) what combinations for meals would you eat and don't need a vast amount to offer, it's not a hotel and patients visitors bring food in which is something maybe should be  looked at food being asked for given but not eaten cause a takeaway brought. Sometimes when going into hospital now instead of smelling the hospital clean bleach like smell, we smell takeaway food !
