"Basic procedures not followed"

About: Western General Hospital / Medical Assessment Unit

(as a relative),

In Western General Edinburgh Acute Receiving Unit, my brother had been admitted.

My wife went in with my brother as he is scared of needles and the nurse added his wrist band without confirming any of his details, then withdrew bloods took them away.

Then another nurse came in and checked his details and name. It turned out that both the name on the computer and the wristband belonged to a difficult person. The wrong person had been called and no identity check completed. Very unprofessional and potentially dangerous.

The unit did not appear busy at this point in time and basic procedures not followed.

Hi Sheridan,

I'm sorry for the experience your brother had, and your wife witnessed, this is not the standard of care that I would expect or want to be delivered at the Western.

It would be helpful for me to be able to follow this up and would ask your brother, or one of you on his behalf, can contact the Patient Experience team with his details and the date they attended.

You can contact the Patient Experience Team:

Once again, I am sorry to hear of your brothers' experience and hope he well on the way to recovery.

Neil
