I never thought I would welcome surgery the way I did, but years of living with an arthritic hip took its toll, with sleepless nights, constant pain and debilitation, leaving me feeling older than my years.
As a seldom attender to the GP, I found them to be attentive, supportive and responsive to my changing needs - thank you!
The initial wait to be seen was around 9 months, which was excessive; however other than the delay, the process was pretty seamless.
Getting early assessment and advice from physio was definitely helpful; however as the condition worsens it becomes so challenging to remain motivated.
I was fortunate that between initial consultant consultation and surgery I only had to wait around 3 months and I have to say the communication about appointments and pre op preparation was all good.
On to the operation itself. Firstly we should be so proud of NHS Fife's NTC facility. It really is an exemplar of excellence. The environment is welcoming, clean, calm and gives a good first impression, which instils confidence.
The staff, without exception, and across all disciplines and roles were kind and compassionate, and when you combine that with confidence and competence you have the recipe for success!!
A huge thanks to Dr Ballantyne and Nick the Anaesthetist who made me feel safe on the day and to each and every member of the team who contributed to my care in that 24 hour period. It was clear to me that there was a real team approach to care in the NTC and it felt hugely reassuring to see disciplines work together and communicate well. Just one point worth noting was the absence of AHP staff after 5pm which may just have been an anomaly, but if not, it would be worth addressing this, to optimise same day discharge.
So, in summary, I'm now 4 weeks post op and making a good and steady recovery. The absence of the deep, throbbing constant arthritic pain accompanied by improved sleep has made me feel human again! I am aware I have a way to go to fully recover but I am already feeling the benefits of surgery and looking forward to the future.
A huge and sincere thanks to you all.
