Having been referred by the Nurse Practitioner and a GP within my local practice for emergency treatment of oedema, the care I received within the acute medical unit was exemplary. From admission to the assessment unit through several days of treatment, the staff in all aspects of the service (including admin, domestic, pharmacy and above all nursing and medical) could not have been better. Despite this being a very busy department, as you would imagine, with not knowing what emergency was likely to come through the door next, the staff members were extremely helpful and caring. Each and every one took time to explain everything in as much detail as necessary so that I was not left in any doubt as to what was happening. Having been given the information/advice, I was involved in making decisions about my treatment. This information was delivered with empathy and understanding and you were not left in any doubt that you and your treatment was what mattered at that time. They took as much time as necessary in spite of having many, often complicated, situations to deal with and the inevitable difficulties. In my opinion if any health episode can be described as ‘happy’ this was for me, largely due to the staff on the acute medical unit of Perth Royal Infirmary.
