"Consistent communication would make the care even better"

About: Musgrove Park Hospital / Exmoor Ward

(as the patient),

I was admitted to hospital with a severe kidney infection after collapsing, losing the ability to speak, and experiencing intense pain. From the moment I arrived, every nurse, healthcare assistant (HCA), and porter I encountered was exceptionally kind, caring, and attentive. They always checked that I was comfortable and had everything I needed.

The ward could be quite noisy at night due to other patients, but one thoughtful HCA gave me earplugs, which made a big difference. Staff were consistently welcoming, compassionate, and friendly — even going the extra mile. One day, because it was so hot, a member of staff handed out ice lollies, which was such a thoughtful gesture and really brightened the day.

While the care was excellent, I feel communication between staff and patients could be improved. For example, I was told I couldn’t be discharged because I needed another kidney scan — but later it turned out I didn’t actually need one. I arrived on a Thursday, and on Friday a doctor advised staying one more night, saying I could go home the next day. However, I was later told I couldn’t leave due to the scan and that if I self-discharged, I wouldn’t be given antibiotics because the pharmacy was closed. I stayed another night, only to be told the next day that I didn’t require a scan after all and that they were simply waiting for my urine test results. Feeling much better, I eventually decided to self-discharge.

Overall, the kindness, compassion, and good humour of the staff made a frightening and uncomfortable experience far more bearable. Their dedication and warmth truly stood out — I just think clearer, more consistent communication would make the care even better.

I will feedback to the team. In regards to the communication part, at times decisions can change and I can understand your frustrations. I will discuss this with the medics on the ward.
