My father was admitted to the RAH very weak and seriously dehydrated due to a combination of a kidney infection and heart problems, but thankfully with his facilities intact. After initial treatment he was moved to ward 27. All went well and he gradually gained strength until the time when he was taken down to radiography for a routine MRI. The scan was straightforward. So far so good.
He was then abandoned in a corridor for an hour and a half with no access to a toilet . Asking at least 6 people for help, no one was willing to come to his aid or tell him what was happening until desperate and now lying in a pool of urine, he called me his daughter to come and get him help. I spoke to staff on ward 27, they shrugged, not their problem.
So who of the dozens of people who passed him by is responsible for the indignity my father suffered. If he had had a heart attack would anyone have lifted a finger, if he hadn’t had his phone and I made a fuss would he still be there cold and dehydrated, if he had been confused or needing medication. This is an unforgivable way to treat anyone, procedures need to be changed and someone take responsibility.
"My frail elderly father's right to simple dignity"
