"Everyone in the team was lovely and reassuring"

About: Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital (Wonford) / Gynaecology

(as a service user),

I attended for the insertion of a cervical cerclage recently. I was shown straight to a side room upon my arrival. Unfortunately I was not called around to theatre until 16:30. This was due to a busy day and I knew I was on the emergency list and would be slotted in as and when. People did pop in throughout the day to check on me and reassure me that I hadn't been forgotten. I was relieved that I had not been stood down and told to return the following day. I did feel sorry for the nurses who couldn't offer me anything to eat as I had to starve!

The team I saw were all so lovely. A massive shout out to the two amazing surgeons. One came to see me in recovery to give me an update of how it had gone. Everyone was so lovely and chatty that it put me at ease in what was quite a scary and vulnerable situation. The anaesthetists Henry and Tom were also great and very personable. Special thanks for putting on my podcast (Unbelievable Truth, which I would recommend). It was nice to listen to that and not focus on what else was going on. Henry made it clear that he was there to support me and that if I needed anything I just needed to ask. It made such a difference when I felt quite scared and overwhelmed.

A shout out to all the lovely lovely nurses and midwives. I was trying to remember names but after the stress of the day it is actually quite hard so I so sorry that I cannot name everyone! There was a lovely nurse, I think called Clare, who came to get me from recovery, made me another cup of tea and went in search of something for me to eat. My only complaint was that the only vegetarian option you had was a salad, which after starving since midnight was not quite what I had in mind! A huge thank you to the theatre lady (lovely smile with glasses) who brought me a cup of tea in recovery, which I was so grateful for! There was also the (I think she was called) Ward Coordinator who popped her head in before she left for the day to thank me for being patient and not moaning about having to wait. She had kept me updated throughout the day as well. I can understand how people get frustrated with the wait, and not being able to be given a time due to the nature of the list itself, but you are all there to do a job and in my opinion work bloody hard so it would not have been reasonable for me to complain. I came prepared as I was forewarned that I could have a wait a while. I was just relieved that I was not delayed to the following day.

Everyone in the team was so lovely and reassuring. Being in that situation in the theatre I could have felt very vulnerable but I knew that I was well looked after by a team of absolute professionals.

Thank you so much and hopefully I can give you another review after a successful delivery. It was nice to have everyone's well wishes for the future.

On a side note I think my Epic may have gone awry. The episode for the surgery was still showing as active, even a day after. There is now an AVS and I am showing as being discharged but it is also now showing an additional appt booked, if someone can correct that please. I don't want it to look like I DNA'd but I am not sure why it has appeared as a "future appt". Thanks!
