"Battling addiction over 20 years"

About: Inclusion Recovery Hampshire / Family Recovery Team Inclusion Recovery Hampshire / No Wrong Door Inclusion Recovery Hampshire / Specialist Alcohol Team

(as a service user),

I was battling addiction for over twenty years and failed at every attempt to over come my addictions. Until  I was referred to Inclusion in Havant, Hampshire.

At first I didn’t feel that  they could help me and I was a private person and didn’t know how to open up and be honest to people I don’t know. So i  was a bit un-optimistic about how they could help me. But I soon realised.

From my first appointment. I was amazed at the wealth of experience and knowledge the recovery support worker had and this helped me to open up and be honest. From me being truly honest it actually helped me to actually accept I do need help and I could  not do it on my own. So from this moment I was one hundred percent committed.

My recovery support worker gave me great advice and explained group sessions that would benefit me. I first started with family footprints because at the time my children were taken into foster care. Family footprints really helped me to realize and understand the true impacts of substance misuse has on children and this helped me greatly.

I was then giving advice on recognising and managing emotions and I enrolled for this group and honestly this helped me so much . I wish I could have learnt this years ago as this would have saved me so many times . But this was another great step for me in my recovery. I can now recognise and manage my emotions and actually keep them under control. At this moment I had a totally new outlook on what I want for my future .

I was then given advice on the isfp program and I enrolled in this also and also this helped me very much . All the different aspects of the course helps you to understand why you used and how to avoid this situations and how to mange your life substance free . This course also helped me greatly. From this moment I knew I have finally beaten my addiction and after 9 months of my children being in foster care I won back full custody of my children.

Me and my children are so happy now and I would never allow myself to fall back into addiction. I have finally beaten my addiction and my whole outlook on life is so much more positive and happy. I wake up and fall to sleep every day happy and I am so grateful to the professionals who helped me achieve this . I am now one year and three months clean from my addictions and have never looked back . And also I do not miss any of it . I wasted too many years of my life with out realising and now I understand and enjoy life to the max .

Thank you so much for sharing your story, its seems that you really utilised the various support that Inclusion offers. I was particularly pleased to hear about the impact of attending Family Footprints and that the learning from this has helped you understand the impact on your children, I am sure that this played a part in the reunification of your family. You are an inspiration to others, I wish you and your family every happiness for the future.
