"A&E treatment"

About: University Hospital Wishaw / Emergency Department

(as a relative),

My granda - who is in his 80s - was taken into UHW following a fall in the house. My granda had severe injuries from this fall. Big open gash on his brow area, no skin on his nose, his face was pretty messed up also, the left hand side of his body has been impacted by his fall. His ribs are at least cracked if not broken he was unable to stand cause he had twisted or hurt his left knee also.

Your priority system meant my granda had to sit from approximately 3:30 until 10:20 because your priority system didn’t have him a priority with us! In our experience, your system doesn’t work! NHS is supposed to be a system of care (posters everywhere in the facility state it) but all I seen was neglect and hostility by the staff! It seems asking a question isn’t the right thing to do and is irritating. Your posters again state otherwise!

I will be taking this further as the treatment my granda received was disgusting. Disappointment doesn’t even come close. Can I ask if there is any member of staff with any sort of compassion and heart to do the job they are there for? There was not 1 thing any member of staff done in there which I would say I agree with.

We experienced no respect from staff. They stood around in groups chatting, snacking and avoiding eye contact with anyone other than staff! The tone in which we were spoken was very rude and unapproachable!

We were scared to leave him with yous on his own. What does that say about your National Health Service? I will be taking this further by any means. I can honestly say the time I spent in your premises I never seen one thing positive or helpful!

Dear charliedz78,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience regarding your granda’s recent visit to the Emergency Department at University Hospital Wishaw. I am truly sorry to hear about the distressing circumstances surrounding his fall and the injuries he sustained.

I want to sincerely apologise for the length of time your granda waited to be seen and for the way you felt you were treated during your time in our care. We understand how frightening and upsetting it must have been for both your granda and your family, and I deeply regret that our service did not meet your expectations or reflect the standards we aim to uphold.

Your feedback about staff behaviour and communication is concerning and has been shared with the department’s senior team for immediate review. We are committed to providing compassionate, respectful, and timely care to all patients, and it is clear from your account that we fell short.

We would welcome the opportunity to speak with you directly so we can better understand what happened and ensure appropriate steps are taken. If you are willing, please contact our Patient Affairs team at 01698 366558 or email patientaffairs@lanarkshire.scot.nhs.uk.

Please be assured that your concerns are being taken seriously. We are grateful that you brought this to our attention, and we are committed to learning from your experience to improve the care we provide.

Kind regards,

Julie.
