"Allergies Menu at RAI Paisley"

About: Royal Alexandra Hospital / Urology (Ward 28)

(as a service user),

Having spent over 3 weeks in RAH urology, firstly I must post about the wonderful staff, right across the board they have been fantastic and have looked after me well.

I was put onto the special allergies menu, due to dairy intolerance. This was fantastic for me

Then one week it all went horribly wrong, the catering staff tried to palm me off with something that wasn’t as requested: a couple slices of cold ham and some roast potatoes, I refused it as not being as requested, so they dumped some gravy and green peas on it for some reason, no thought of cross contamination or such.

Anyways the nursing staff were not very happy and complained robustly, asking catering staff to go through ingredients of all meals to get something dairy free, I ended up with some chilli.

Same thing happened again again another day, I ended up with cold ham, baked potato and some cold vegetables.

Whilst nursing staff keep complaining, they seem to be met with complete indifference from catering staff.

Dear courageym76,

My colleague Alyson has asked me to share the below response on their behalf.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experiences of care on Ward 28. We're very pleased to hear your kind words about the nursing and clinical staff, and that you felt well cared and advocated for during your stay.

I am also very sorry to learn of the difficulties you encountered with the special allergies menu. We understand how important it is for patients with dietary needs to feel confident in the meals provided, and we regret that your expectations were not consistently met.

I wanted to assure you that our catering team will always work to accommodate specific request for meals. Unfortunately, due to supply issues that occurred during your stay our options were more limited than we would like.

I would like to reassure you that we have taken tour concerns seriously and that we are actively working with our suppliers to improve availability and ensure that allergy-aware meals are both safe and satisfactory. Your feedback will be shared with our catering and clinical teams to support ongoing improvements.

Kind regards,
Alyson
