I visited the Fluoroscopy department for hysterosalpingogram (they put dye into your cervix to check for abnormalities or adhesions that could be causing infertility). The nurse greeting us was amazing and very welcoming. But in the procedure room when asked by a staff member if I was informed of what was going to happen by the patient information letter. I said yes, but I didn’t receive one and they asked if I used Dr google in a tone I found sarcastic. (I didn’t as I work in the healthcare profession so I am very aware of what to research). I then signed the consent form and asked if they could tell me if they saw anything and it was agreed, but would have to wait for the official report for diagnosis.
I then lie down for the very invasive and intimate procedure. But they were having some difficulty as I had a previous procedure in that area and were clearly frustrated which I believe was evident by their tone of voice. They called for support and this staff member seemed annoyed too and was experiencing the same difficulty and this again seemed evident in their tone of voice and to me showed clear frustration. After sometime and without warning I had this immense pain (about 9/10) and shouted for them to stop. They stated that this meant the procedure was working. I then shouted again for them to stop. And they said that I want the results. Yes, I did want the results, but clearly not like this. It was evident that I was in immense pain and crying uncontrollably, but not a single person out of the 5 people in the room suggested to stop the procedure.
When the procedure finished the staff member just pulled off the sterile drape without a thought for my dignity. I felt so exposed in that moment. I was also denied any information on what was seen even though they agreed too. I was not offered any pain relief even though I was clearly in immense pain during the procedure and afterwards. All I was told to do was to have a stiff one by the staff member and they also told my partner this. I was left to hobble down the corridor in tears to go to the pharmacy and buy my own pain relief. This was a very distressing experience for a procedure for something that is a very sensitive topic for myself and my partner.
"A very distressing experience"
