"Treatment for ovarian cancer"

About: Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital (Wonford) / Cancer Services Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital (Wonford) / General surgery Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital (Wonford) / Gynaecology Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital (Wonford) / Intensive & Critical Care Unit

(as the patient),

I was diagnosed in March with ovarian cancer.  I was admitted to Wynard ward at that time as I was in a lot of pain. The angels on Wynard ward looked after me so well and I returned home to start my chemotherapy as an outpatient. Under the care of the fabulous Kate, my oncologist, who always takes time with us to make sure we are clear and happy about everything. And with great support from the specialist oncology nurses, Jacky, Gail and Monica I have made it through four rounds of chemo.

I recently had my debulking surgery which was a major operation. Sarah, my surgeon, was so wonderful from the moment we met her we felt confident that she was going to do an amazing job for us. She spent a lot of time explaining everything to us and answering any questions we had. On surgery day the team were so kind to me. Rupert administered my epidural which worked an absolute treat and before I knew it I was awake on ICU.

The nurses in ICU who looked after me were so attentive and compassionate.

After a few days in ICU I was transferred back to Wynard ward which was like coming home!! I am so appreciative to all the angels on Wynard ward; housekeeping, catering, HCAs, nurses and doctors, they are all so wonderful and I am so grateful for all their care.

Lovely Dr Jim coming to see me every morning encouraging me and finally telling me I’m a gold star example of how well this surgery can go!

Having cancer is tough, it’s a shock and no one sees it coming, but having the care I have had at Royal Devon and Exeter hospital has made the whole experience so much easier to bear. Thank you all for everything you do
