"Open visiting is not working"

About: North Devon District Hospital / General medicine

(as a service user),

In my experience, open visiting is not working for patients.

I, and presumably other seriously ill, exposed guys, or women, do not want older members of the opposite sex permanently parked opposite them whilst they are on the ward for days on end.

Having someone whose manner was bossy, rude and unpleasant (they were acting as advocate for their partner who completely ignored them for seven hours at a time), parked six foot from my face day after day after day actually started to affect my own recovery.

I feel this is a stupid policy and it should be changed. Two hours a day is ample. Mens wards should be for men and staff, not for older women visitors nesting for weeks at a time. I cannot stress enough how the atmosphere was ruined and moods affected by this continuous presence in the ward. It's not right.

And then they started trying to talk to me. And make comments about me. Little jokes.

Now granted, I am not at my most patient having nearly died three days ago. But whoever it was that thought that open visiting rights was a good idea has made a grievous error of judgement.

I strongly suggest the hospital refers to the normal restrictions of two hours per day.

Dear Harpf95

Thank you for sharing your experience. I am sorry to hear how distressing the open visiting policy has been for you at what I am sure is a difficult time.

I want to let you know that the open visiting is a mandatory policy that has been introduced under national legislation. It is designed to help patients receive more flexible and timely support from family and carers. This is especially important for those who rely on carers to help with communication, personal care and emotional support and can be crucial to recovery and wellbeing.

That said, we understand that the way open visiting works in practice can sometimes feel overwhelming, particularly in shared ward environments. You comfort and recovery are equally as important and it is clear on this occasion the situation was difficult for you.

If you experience similar issues again, please do not hesitate to speak with the ward staff. They are there to support you and can help to address any concerns to make your stay as comfortable as possible.

I hope you are recovering well.

Kind regards

Lisa
