"Feeling left to suffer"

About: General Practices in Grampian

(as the patient),

I have recurrent pilonidal cysts, the first of which was dealt with surgically. Ever since then, the GP just tells me I've been referred to elsewhere and there is nothing they can do.

I am 30 years old, work a manual job and find myself having to take time off so I am not leaking at work. I am so concerned about this but feel like I have nowhere to turn. I told my GP today that I feel this is affecting my mental health and I just feel like they were only pretending to listen.

I have no idea how long my wait for help will be. I feel like I am barely without a cyst at this point. Is this due to another issue like bacteria stopping the wound healing, or has the internal wound never healed? I do not know and my GP practice doesn't seem to care.

Dear Plutofq68,

I’m sorry to hear about the struggles you have had getting advice and treatment from your GP. From your story I can see why the whole situation is affecting your mental health now too.

I’m not linked to any of the services you are looking for advice from, I work in the Quality Improvement Team at NHS Grampian and have the job of making sure the feedback shared on Care Opinion reaches the teams it was intended for. Unfortunately, the GP Practices don’t have responding access on Care Opinion, in fact most of the GP Practices in Grampian are independently run and have their own complaints and feedback processes. They won’t see this post with it being shared with them directly. I’m also responding because it sounds like you are stuck in limbo between the hospital and the GP and I’d like to try to get you some advice on what to do next. Even if it’s just a way to find out where you are on the referral list.

Would you mind getting in touch with me directly? I know this would mean breaking your anonymity, which you might not feel comfortable doing, so it’s completely up to you. I can be contacted on email: kirsten.dickson@nhs.scot or telephone / text: 07885720267.

Take care,

Kirsten
