"Every member of staff we encountered was amazing"

About: Antrim Area Hospital / Acorn Paediatric Ambulatory Unit Antrim Area Hospital / Ward A2 Paediatrics

(as a parent/guardian),

I had previously submitted a recent review about the Acorn Centre and the A2 Paediatric Ward in Antrim Area Hospital following an admission for my daughter who had been diagnosed with a UTI.

Unfortunately, my daughter did not recover as well as expected following a treatment of antibiotics so my GP once again sent us to the Acorn Centre (10 days after first admission.)

I just have to reiterate how amazing this facility is and praise the wonderful staff that make it what it is. Karen who helped collect a urine sample from my daughter and kept my spirits up, Judith who remembered us from our previous visit and took the time to talk and provide such care and attention to my daughter, and Kelly who was just so very kind and attentive and provided such reassurance to us throughout.

It really was such a pleasure to be cared for by such a wonderful team. I again have to mention the wonderful doctor - I believe it is Doctor Shahid, my apologies if I have got this wrong but he really is such a wonderful doctor, his empathetic nature as well as his care and attention is second to none - thank you for taking such good care of my daughter and for genuinely caring.

We were once again admitted onto the ward and I was accompanied by Kelly who again just reassured me that everything would be ok and we would be well looked after. I really appreciated the response to my last story explaining why children were placed in certain bays - it really clarified it for me and I genuinely appreciate the time Peter took in coming back to me. Thankfully, the ward was much, much quieter than the previous week.

We were greeted by the deputy sister who very kindly took our details and got us settled in. Thank you for having the best chats and taking time to just calm my worries and nerves. Shortly after, doctor Hannah came and spoke with us and explained what was going on. She took her time, explained in language I could easily understand and was happy to answer any questions both my husband and myself had.

Thankfully, my daughter was discharged the following day after a really good night's rest. She has since had a follow-up call from doctor Hynds who explained the need for an additional course of antibiotics.

All in all, this was a much better experience and simply every member of staff we encountered was amazing. Thank you all for doing such a wonderful job and taking such fantastic care of my daughter. We are so appreciative.

Dear fiona88, thank you again for taking the time to write into care opinion.

I am very pleased to read that your experience of care both in the Acorn unit and A2 was so positive after your previous mixed experience. We really do try to ensure that the care provided in each admission meets the needs both physical and emotional of children and families.

I will pass on your comments to each of the staff you have named and to the units in general as such appreciation really does make a difference

I hope your daughter responds well to her current treatment and continues to recover.

thank you

Peter Johnston
