My wife had dementia and following a seizure at home becoming unconscious, was admitted by ambulance to RIE resus unit. After a scan & tests and stabilising her condition; she was transferred to Acute Medical ward for a night then on to Transplant Ward 206. There we had an ensuite side room. The excellent professional skill and care with abundant compassion and friendship was continued throughout by the paramedics, resus, medical and transplant teams. Susan regained conscious for a weekend when I was able to give her sips of water and nibbles of hospital food, including ice cream and tomato omelette. We watched the Lionesses win the Women's Euro final.
Also we were given a relatives ensuite bedroom so my Daughters and I could take turns sitting beside Susan as she otherwise remained unconscious. The Palliative and Chaplaincy teams provided further end of life care and spiritual support. We were all in an amazing protective bubble.
Susan was comfortable and peaceful the whole time and after her last breath it seemed she just floated away. I saw her in the mortuary before I left so I felt we had an wonderful experience from beginning to end in the hospital. Thank you NHS.
"The excellent care of my wife"
