"The excellent care of my wife"

About: Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh at Little France / Accident & Emergency Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh at Little France / Acute Medical Unit Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh at Little France / Spiritual Care Service Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh at Little France / Transplants Scottish Ambulance Service / Emergency Ambulance

(as a relative),

My wife had dementia and following a seizure at home becoming unconscious, was admitted by ambulance to RIE resus unit. After a scan & tests and stabilising her condition; she was transferred to Acute Medical ward for a night then on to Transplant Ward 206. There we had an ensuite side room. The excellent professional skill and care with abundant compassion and friendship was continued throughout by the paramedics, resus, medical and transplant teams. Susan regained conscious for a weekend when I was able to give her sips of water and nibbles of hospital food, including ice cream and tomato omelette. We watched the Lionesses win the Women's Euro final.

Also we were given a relatives ensuite bedroom so my Daughters and I could take turns sitting beside Susan as she otherwise remained unconscious. The Palliative and Chaplaincy teams provided further end of life care and spiritual support. We were all in an amazing protective bubble.

Susan was comfortable and peaceful the whole time and after her last breath it seemed she just floated away. I saw her in the mortuary before I left so I felt we had an wonderful experience from beginning to end in the hospital. Thank you NHS.

Thank you so much for your lovely message. It really means a lot to all of us from both a front door team as well as the Ward 206 team.

We’re so sorry for your loss, but truly glad to know that you and your family felt supported and cared for during such a difficult time. It was a privilege to look after Susan, and to give you all the space to be with her in those final days. Your kind words will be shared with the team — they’ll be very touched.

Take care, and thank you again for taking the time to write to us.
