"My daughter's undiagnosed illness and her treatment"

About: New Cross Hospital / Accident and emergency New Cross Hospital / Gastroenterology

(as a parent/guardian),

My youngest daughter has been admitted into hospital 46 times in the past year . Prior to that she was hospitalised for the whole of 2023 - She has cyclatic vomiting syndrome and probable undiagnosed Gastroparesis.

During this time she has been treated quite appallingly .

She has been told it’s just sickness , you have wind , you have this that any other diagnosis they can think of .

She has been told to leave at A&E otherwise she would be removed.

During these severe bouts of sickness she has been accused of going into hospital to get a certain drug to get her high!

We have spoken with many professionals who said they cannot diagnose her.

My question is always well somebody must be able to diagnose her illness, my answer is we will refer her on .

She doesn’t, she gets anti sickness meds and saline bags and sent home only to be in severe pain and vomiting again within a matter of weeks or even days .

This unknown illness has a massive impact on her life and her family .

As a mother I have to watch my child deteriorate on a daily basis , heart-breaking is not a big enough word to describe this pain .

She has no normality in her life , she cannot organise or arrange anything and cannot work because of this undiagnosed illness .

What outrages me most is the way she is treated by senior practitioners, my question is why they do their jobs , are they not mothers/ fathers  and if so would they like their child to be treated in this way?

I have asked many questions, submitted concerns, asked for second opinions, reported inappropriate conversations with her that are simply not relevant or warranted.

I have a whole library of emailed concerns , many that just get ignored .

As a family we see her very unwell for most of her days , unable to eat and drink and barely function in the real world but still it goes on .

Surely in this day of technology and medicine someone somewhere has answers for this young woman.

Still it goes on , week after week , year after year and still no further forward .

Recently she was told she needs to be discharged after an 8-week stay - within less than 48 hours she was taken back to A&E with the same symptoms.

Thank you very much for taking the time to post comments regarding your daughter's recent patient experience.

I am sorry for any distress this matter has caused. To enable us to look further into your concerns, I would be grateful if you could contact the Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) on 01902 695362 or rwh-tr.PALS@nhs.net who can assist further.

Kindest regards

Alison Dowling
