"Complex and life-saving surgery for pancreatic cancer"

About: Manchester Royal Infirmary / Hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery

(as the patient),

I was informed that my local NHS could not perform surgery to remove a small pancreatic tumour associated with SMA (superior mesenteric artery). After research, I was so fortunate to find Mr de’ Liguori-Carino at Manchester Royal Infirmary.

His skill, knowledge and determination has saved my life. The surgery has not been without continued complications to my digestive system but I am getting stronger each and every day. My future and outlook of life has been forever changed all down to this amazing surgeon. He is an absolute asset to any trust. I only ask that he shares his immense skills with other trusts so they can save the lives of many others affected by this dreadful cancer.

I am now aged 55 years and can once again look forward to a future I was told would not be possible due to the complexity of the location of the tumour as the surgery was too tricky.

Sadly, I lost my husband a few weeks ago. The thought of my 14 year old son and his brother (aged 23 yrs) being without parents was devastating. Had I not found Mr de’ Liguori-Carino my boys would now be without their parents. It’s unthinkable to imagine how their lives would have been turned upside down.

With heart-warming, overwhelming emotions and thanks for Mr de’ Liguori-Carino, we can continue to live and enjoy life in the memory of my darling husband and dad who we lost through Thyroid NTRK cancer. He was not so fortunate to have had the opportunity to have his life saved.

I strongly believe my determination to find a surgeon to cure me of this dreaded disease was meant to be. Thank you Mr de’ Liguori-Carino - you’ll never know how much you have transformed my family’s life. I can only hope that I continue to be remission and rid of cancer forever more.

Thank you for your positive comments posted on the Care Opinion website regarding the care you received within GI Medicine and Surgery in the MRI.

It was very kind of you to take the time to write about your story and the great care you received from Mr De Liguori. The lasting impact on you and your family is what we strive for and to see this reflected in the output of our dedicated surgeons is wonderful.

I can assure you that we have passed this on to Mr De Liguori and the wider team.

Yours Sincerly,

The Patient Experience Team

Update posted by Mrs Strong (the patient)

Thank you so very much for your response. It’s so important that everyone diagnosed with this dreaded disease has the opportunity to have life saving treatment, where possible. If only one person reads this, who is in my position, and has the opportunity for surgery, then this post has been more than worthwhile. There are so many incredible surgeons in our country who I can only pray that their skills can be shared nationwide amongst other surgeons.
