"Good and bad around mum's end of life care"

About: Hull Royal Infirmary / Older people's healthcare Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust / Patient transport service (PTS)

(as a relative),

My mum was recently moved to ward 130E from ward 8 (Hull Royal) she was getting discharged the next day. She also had dementia, a nurse and porter turned up late on that night, not much empathy, she was told- you're moving because we need your bed.

She arrived,  the ward was in  darkness, lots of men patients about, she was just left there frightened. After an hour she shouted-  Is anybody there? It took a few shouts before someone came. They put Mum in bed and left her. They didn't put her CPAP machine on her, didn't check what her needs were. Mum was so scared throughout the night, appalling treatment of a Lady with dementia, who also couldn't walk as she was disabled.

She was discharged next morning, brought home by Yorkshire Ambulance Transport (they were wonderful). Mum's dressing on her leg for cellulitis was held on by one side, leaving it flapping with green gunge coming out of the wound, why didn't they change the dressing!? It was still infected, which was confirmed by Community nurses. I called in for a home visit the same day!

It really was a shambles, just felt like a production line. The impression was -  discharged, put her in a dark dismal ward out of the way, don't worry about her needs whether she could walk or not, not caring she had dementia, and scared! Didn't put her Cpap machine on her (which was with her) Appalling treatment to a vulnerable woman in her 80's.

2 days later she was in hospital again, very ill, sats all over the place. Re-suss was wonderful and tried to help Mum in every way they could, but alas they could not do anything more for her. Mum was transferred to FAB ward. Absolutely every single member of staff, Doctors, nurses, etc was wonderful. Family members were in the room with Mum for hours, nurses brought us refreshments, aswell as taking care of Mum with kindness, empathy and professionalism. Our family will never forget how the staff treat Mum they went above and beyond in every way. Thank you fab ward. Mum died peacefully and with dignity 15 hours later of Bronco pneumonia.

Please address some of these issues ward 130East Mum could have been one of your dearly loved relatives
