"Difficulty in getting my pregnancy vaccination"

About: Whiteabbey Hospital

(as a service user),

The vaccination I had been encouraged on multiple occasions was not available anywhere in Belfast and I had to travel to Whiteabbey.

Nowhere on the appointment was it detailed where in Whiteabbey Hospital the appointment was, other than 'Antenatal Clinic'. Not the building name, directions, or a map.

On arrival at the hospital, there were no signs for 'Antenatal Clinic' and the person on reception I spoke to didn't know where I should go either. After a while I found a sign for the 'Midwifery Unit'- which seemed right, but the sign was pointed in a direction you wouldn't see from entering the hospital, only as you left from the other direction.

Once at the appointment the staff member (Roy) was extremely helpful and took a great deal of time to explain everything to me. He was fantastic. So no complaints there.

People are criticised a lot for not getting their vaccinations but the fact I was not able to get an appointment locally (e.g. at the numerous major hospitals and midwife clinics within Belfast, pharmacies or GP surgeries) and the poor instructions once I was at the hospital meant I nearly gave up several times. I am lucky to have a car and a job that allows flexibility for these appointments. I am also aware of the benefits of vaccinations and not as nervous as some people can be. Feels awful some peoples babies are out at risk with all these barriers in the way for them.

Dear runningnb55

Apologies for the confusion on the day you presented to receive your vaccination.

The antenatal vaccinations are administered by our vaccination team and are hosted in Community Midwifery hub, ward 9, every Friday 10-12 midday.

I have reviewed signage and external and internal signage exists for the community Midwifery Hub.

A temporary sign is erected inside the building at the front door to advise of the vaccination team.

I have asked all staff to ensure that antenatally the exact location is shared at all appointments and hope this gives guidance to other mums to be.

Community midwifery lead
