"Treatment for wear and tear in my back"

About: Ayrshire Central Hospital / Physiotherapy Crosshouse Hospital / Accident & Emergency Crosshouse Hospital / Trauma & orthopaedics Three Towns Resource Centre / Physiotherapy

(as the patient),

I had suffered from back pain, siatac pain for many years and had managed with it. Earlier this year l had a flare up, much worse than previous. I had already had to give up work due to back issues, but this flare up caused me to be completely house bound for 6 weeks, crawling up stairs struggling with every task, showering cooking getting up and on to the toilet.

I was sent to Accident and Emergency by GP and saw an Advanced Physiotherapy Practitioner, Arlene she organised an other MRI and Re Referral to Physio Lindsay.

Physio was extremely helpful again and new exercises, since it was different pain from previous. These helped me to regain some better quality of life, could walk my dog and are continuing to build my stamina and reduce my dependence on pain killers.

I was then given opportunity to attend 6 week back class at Irvine Central Hospital delivered by Alan, Rosie and Morton on varying days. I found it extremely helpful and gave me invaluable insights into various pain and advice to help manage and deal with my issues. It was great discussing with other sufferers and was reassuring to know that flare up wasn't caused by any of my actions and can happen at anytime.

I have made adaptations to my every day life to enable me to prioritise what matters to me and have accepted that issue won't go away but can help limit it by strengthening my back and with various simple changes ie towel for support at base of back, simple but effective.

Thank you for taking the time and trouble to share this lovely feedback about the care provided within the Emergency Department, University Hospital Crosshouse and by the Physiotherapy Teams at the Three Towns Resource Centre and Ayrshire Central Hospital.

I sorry to hear that you have suffered from sciatic pain for many years and that you recently needed to attend the Emergency Department following a flare up. It is, however great to know that Arlene was able to listen to you, assess your symptoms, arrange an MRI scan, and then refer you on to Lindsay.

It’s also great to know that you found the back classes at ACH to be helpful and informative and that they have given you insights to help you manage and deal with your issues. This is a lovely example of the patient centred care that we strive to provide.

When times are challenging, it’s always nice to hear such positive feedback from our patients and it will be my pleasure to share your feedback with the wider ED and Physio Teams and with all of the staff you have mentioned by name in particular.

Please accept my best wishes and thank you once again for taking the time to acknowledge your care experience.

Kind Regards

Pamela
