"Waiting on ward for an operation to fix a broken knee"

About: Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Orthopaedics (Wards 10a, 10b, 10c &10d)

(as a service user),

After a knee fracture, I attended minor injuries before being sent to Queen Elizabeth A&E. After further wait to be triaged (was told I was an expected admission to orthopaedics), finally admitted to ward late afternoon. Expected surgery next day was cancelled. Expected surgery day after was cancelled.

I understand that there are types of cases that have to be prioritised. However the communication coming to me has been non-existent. The only doctors who have spoken to me since I came on the ward was one to approve medications and another to redo a consent form which was already on file.

How do I feel? I’m lying in bed with a broken leg in a brace, feeling like I don’t matter. I’m sore. It’s hard to sleep in hospital - especially when you have to lie on your back. Two nights I’ve been woken at 11.30pm and 12.30pm respectively to be taken for X-rays. So when I do get to sleep it’s disturbed.

Explain everything you like about efficient processes and busy people, but a bit of empathy and communication would go a long way!

By the way, all of the nursing staff and radiographers have been fab. They seem to be as much in the dark as I am.

Dear Eunelobe63

Thank you for sharing your experience. I am sorry to hear how difficult and frustrating your hospital stay has been. While we recognise that surgery schedules can change due to clinical priorities, the lack of communication you’ve described is not acceptable, and I apologise for the distress this has caused.

As Care Opinion is anonymous, I would be grateful if you could contact our Complaints Team @ ggc.complaints@nhs.scot with your personal details and we can provide a more detailed response. It would be helpful if you could include your Care Opinion link:

I am glad to hear that the nursing staff and radiographers have been supportive and kind. We will make sure your praise is passed on to them which I am sure will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you
