After a knee fracture, I attended minor injuries before being sent to Queen Elizabeth A&E. After further wait to be triaged (was told I was an expected admission to orthopaedics), finally admitted to ward late afternoon. Expected surgery next day was cancelled. Expected surgery day after was cancelled.
I understand that there are types of cases that have to be prioritised. However the communication coming to me has been non-existent. The only doctors who have spoken to me since I came on the ward was one to approve medications and another to redo a consent form which was already on file.
How do I feel? I’m lying in bed with a broken leg in a brace, feeling like I don’t matter. I’m sore. It’s hard to sleep in hospital - especially when you have to lie on your back. Two nights I’ve been woken at 11.30pm and 12.30pm respectively to be taken for X-rays. So when I do get to sleep it’s disturbed.
Explain everything you like about efficient processes and busy people, but a bit of empathy and communication would go a long way!
By the way, all of the nursing staff and radiographers have been fab. They seem to be as much in the dark as I am.
