"Heart problems"

About: Forth Valley Royal Hospital / Cardiology General practices in Forth Valley Glasgow Royal Infirmary / Accident & Emergency Glasgow Royal Infirmary / Cardiology (Wards 19, 24, 43a, 43b & 44a)

(as the patient),

I have had AF for several years causing me to go to  Glasgow Royal Infirmary  several times. I was told I had possible heart failure.

Had cardioversion, after which I felt amazing for a fortnight or or so. Then it wore off. Not as bad as before. GP gave me beta blocker.

Was told they would try cardio ablation. Then told I had enlarged ventricle. Then it was enlarged Atrium , and that ablation was not an option. Surely this should been noted before! They gave me no follow up or options!  GP tried different beta blockers.

Earlier this year had to go to A&E at GRI. Difficulty breathing. Lungs full of fluid. Heart failure! I thought I wasn't going get better. Fortunately I was given  drugs which helped.

I was then referred to Larbert hospital, where I have had the new drug  treatments,  which have vastly improved my quality of life and which may help repair my heart.

The the whole cardiac department, especially the nurse, and cardiologist have been brilliant. The quality of care and attention especially.

I was disappointed to find out that these drug treatments have been available for a while and the cardiologist at Glasgow Royal Infirmary did think it was worth while!

Dear Raptor996,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We are very sorry to hear about the challenges you have faced with your heart condition and the distress this has caused you. We are, however, pleased to know that the treatments you have recently received have made such a positive difference to your quality of life.

From the perspective of our Emergency Department at Glasgow Royal Infirmary, we are glad that when you attended with severe symptoms, our team was able to provide immediate care to help stabilise your condition. We understand how important timely and coordinated treatment is for conditions such as yours, and we regret that you felt there was a lack of clarity and follow-up regarding your longer-term options.

Your feedback is invaluable, and we will ensure it is shared with the relevant teams so that we can reflect on how we communicate, coordinate, and support patients through both emergency and ongoing care. We wish you continued improvement in your health and thank you again for bringing your experience to our attention.
