"I found everything really reassuring"

About: Whiteabbey Hospital / Pre-Assessment Unit

(as a service user),

I attended a pre op assessment in Whiteabbey Hospital. I had never been to Whiteabbey before so was anxious but anyone I met- receptionist, cleaner, nurses were very pleasant. I checked in and was amazed at how clean and bright the area was. The nurses were lovely and put me at ease.

There was a delay as my appointment was for 9.15 and I wasn't called until 9.45 but this wasn't an issue, I could catch up on emails and watched the television in the waiting room. I went to have height, weight and blood pressure taken. ECG and bloods taken. The lady was great and chatty making the process very easy. I sat in the waiting room and in no time at all I was called again. Going through medical history, expectations of what happens on the day and what ifs, such as day procedure or overnight due to query over BMI, antibodies in blood.

I was very grateful to be provided with information booklets on general anesthetic and for the type of surgery I will be having. There was also a "before surgery advice" "specific day case advice" page which really put me at ease. I was also advised of what happens on the day, that when I am given a day I will be given specific information on my own prescribed medication and which not to take. I found everything really reassuring.

Hi empathyyk97

My name is Marie Devlin and I am the manager of the pre assessment unit. Thank you so much for taking the time to give such positive feed back. The staff all work very hard to ensure that all our patients have a positive experience on their surgical journey and to make each patients experience personal to them.

We understand that patients can be very apprehensive about their surgery and anaesthetic and we try to allay any fears or worries that they may have.

Written information that can be read at home gives our patients the opportunity to have some of those questions answered that that may have forgotten to ask at the clinic so thank you for confirming this.

I wish you well with your pending surgery and a speedy recovery.

Regards Marie
