"My husband's palliative care"

About: Banbridge / District Nursing

(as a relative),

My husband sadly was diagnosed with melanoma of his leg. He had attended the city hospital and we were instructed to dress his wound. Unfortunately not fit for further treatment. He continued to deteriorate and I had no idea who to ask for help as his GP only ever rang him. His weight reduced and wound got bigger. I knew he was getting worse and contacted the out of hours for advice.

That night an angel in disguise arrived at my front door, a wonderful district nurse called Jenny. She assessed my husband from head to toe and gave us invaluable advice and support which I can never repay her for. From discussing wound management to offering us equipment we were so grateful for everything. She assured me she would arrange onward referrals and visits to our home and the very next morning this happened. We received input from so many teams who, unfortunately I was never aware of.

We struggled for many months alone and this district nurse was fantastic. She had a wealth of knowledge and explained everything that we both could understand at our level. This nurse had such a caring nature and was so kind to my husband, she made us both feel at ease and nothing was too much of a bother for her.

Sadly he passed away, however without this girl we would never have received the support we did when we really needed it. Def a true hero who deserves recognition for going above and beyond and most definitely born to be a nurse! Thank you again x

I am very sorry to read about the death of your husband.

Thank you for taking the time, in the midst of your grief to share this feedback. We aim to provide, patient centred, holistic care to all our patients receiving palliative care as well as support to their loved ones as required.

I am glad to hear you had the support from Jenny and her District Nursing colleagues. I will have this passed on to her and her team.

Kind regards

Gerard
