"Dementia care and support"

About: North Devon District Hospital / Older people's healthcare

(as a service user),

I have very impressed with all the care the  Admiral nurses give in the north Devon site..

My husband has been diagnosed with dementia and despite my own nursing experience the system is very hard to negotiate to get any help and support. The admiral nurses are an invaluable source and despite being over stretched; with the increasing number of people suffering with this frightening disease, they still give 100% and seek to ensure carers and patients feel supported. The dementia cafe has been a real asset to both my husband who has really engaged in it and my daughter who has appreciated meeting other carers.

Angela who heads up the team has a wealth of experience and understanding, she ensures the team are equipped to do this important role. The team works so well together using their strengths of each nurse to the very best.

Charlotte always keen to listen to those who needs it and always has a smile on her face.

Mel is amazing with the quiz sessions and getting everyone to feel included despite the changes in their dementia symptoms, she adapts everything accordingly as well as supporting the carers.

Dionne is always busy making sure everyone is catered for and she too greets you with a smile and lots of positivity despite the cruelty of this disease.

Corrine works hard and is invaluable in educating others, she has made such a difference to the delirium patients making sure they are diagnosed  correctly and therefore treated appropriately.

As carers of people suffering with dementia there is no primary care support and no mental health support and therefore being in touch with an admiral nurse is our only help and yet they are trying to support both inpatients and the staff as well as the ever growing list of people in the community. I want to thank them all for the initiative; ideas and compassion at a time when I have felt so vulnerable myself.

Thank you so much for your heartfelt message and for taking the time to share your experience and appreciation for the Admiral Nursing team in North Devon. Your words beautifully capture the vital work they do and your acknowledgement of their compassion, dedication, and professionalism.

We deeply understand how overwhelming and isolating it can feel.. It’s inspiring to hear how the Admiral Nurses have been a lifeline to you, your husband, and your daughter. Their ability to bring comfort, connection, and expert care amidst such challenges is a testament to their unwavering commitment.

Angela’s leadership, Charlotte’s warm presence, Mel’s engaging sessions, Dionne’s positivity, and Corrine’s advocacy and education are clearly making a remarkable difference — not just in clinical care, but in restoring dignity, hope, and a sense of community for those living with dementia and their loved ones.

We echo your concerns about the difficulties faced by carers in accessing adequate support in primary and mental health care. The work of the Admiral Nurses highlights the essential need for specialist services and the importance of a holistic approach to care.

Your courage, resilience, and the love you continue to show your husband is both humbling and inspiring. We will continue to work closely with the Admiral Nursing team and others to advocate for better, more coordinated care for patients and carers alike.

With heartfelt appreciation and solidarity,
