"Standard procedures must be flexible"

About: Newham General Hospital / General surgery

(as a service user),

Contrary to what the webpage about it currently says, this hospital is not closed; I had a planned operation there just last week.

The operation itself went smoothly but I felt was discharged far too fast, apparently because I met the standard checklist. But, although I'd eaten, I had also been unable to keep down the food I'd just had and (as I told the ward nurse) had vomited shortly thereafter. I was sick again on the way home and was unable to retain any solid food later that day. Since the bed was not needed for another patient, I feel it was really not appropriate to discharge me that quickly.

I also recall seeing family members accompanying vulnerable patients being refused access to the ward on arrival. One patient did not speak English and was clearly reliant on his young relation to communicate, but she was told to return to the entrance hall and stay in contact with him only via mobile 'phone. I had seen another patient there who was visibly disturbed by the unfamiliar environment; if his older male companion was also refused access to his ward, then that would have caused great distress.

Standard procedures may be useful but must be flexible enough to cope with patients' essential individual needs. Please ensure that these adjustments are made urgently.
