"Failing to listen"

About: Somerset House / Adult mental health service

(as a service user),

Today is my wedding anniversary. I haven’t been well so I didn’t expect the day to be good exactly but I didn’t expect to spend it in helpless tears either.

About two weeks ago I went for an assessment at Somerset house. It seemed really positive, the social worker who assessed me said that I could go for a psychology assessment with the community mental health team and she mentioned a range of different second line antidepressants that I could try. I left feeling hopeful. I struggled through the wait for the response but I persevered in the belief that support would be available at the end of the wait.

What arrived felt like a gut punch. The respondents clearly had not listened. They described past treatments inaccurately and said they had were successful when I had specifically said the opposite. There would be no further support or assessment from the service as had been described and the recommendation was to go back and to repeat the treatments that I already told you were  unsuccessful. And this was presented in a letter to with no opportunity to reply.

I feel like the only way to be taken seriously is to kill myself, and obviously at that point it is too late to receive help.

It is not easy to seek help from your service. I can’t fathom how you can work in mental health treatment and utterly fail to listen.
