"Being prescribed penicillin when my medical notes clearly say I am allergic to it"

About: North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust / NHS 111 (North West) Stockton Heath Med. Centre Warrington Hospital / Accident and emergency

(as the patient),

I recently saw a paramedic at the surgery as I had had a chesty cough for over 4 weeks. They said they would forward their recommendation to the doctors and that I would receive a text to collect a scrip .

At 9pm that day I took the second dose of the medication. At 12 pm I was sick and started with severe diarrhoea. By 5am I was covered with a rash and my hands had swollen so much I could not get off my rings .

I rang 111 and subsequently paramedics came out. By then I had read the leaflet in the medication and realised I had been given a form of penicillin.[I had felt so relieved to get some medication that I had not stopped to read it earlier].

The paramedics spoke to a doctor . Because we had no antihistamine. I was then given an antihistamine injection  I then received a text to say that a scrip was at the pharmacy for a different antibiotic.

By about 8pm I was feeling worse again again and my hands seemed to be even more swollen and sore .I called  111 again and they said I should go to the hospital .

At the hospital I was given a course of steroids and sent home. The consultant at the hospital reiterated what the pharmacy had said. That I must report to my doctors on the Monday morning, as this was classed as a serious incident.

I would like to add that the help from 111 and A&E was first class. They got me an apt with my surgery when there were no e-consult or telephone spots, even at 8:01.They assured me I should ring them if I had  similar problems. .
