I was referred for a breast appointment and scan from my GP after experiencing pain and redness on my breast. It was a quick turnaround and I was offered an appointment in 2 weeks from my initial GP appointment.
I arrived at the RAH - desk 1 outpatients and had a lovely experience with the desk staff who were really warm and welcoming. I was really nervous. At the time of my appointment, the staff member I was seeing (I was too nervous to remember their name) came and got me and asked if I would be OK with a student being present - which I was. I explained the symptoms I was experiencing and the staff member did a physical exam of my breasts. They were speaking mostly to the student nurse which I guess was fine as I had consented to the teaching, however I did feel a bit invisible. The staff member said that all was fine and that they would write to my GP to confirm nothing was wrong.
I asked what they thought the pain was and told me hormonal and that I should use ibuprofen gel. I didn't believe this to be true as it was pain outwith my normal cycle and it didn't respond to over the counter painkillers (as discussed with my GP). However, I felt too dismissed to say this at the time. I was given a leaflet about breast pain and I left. The appointment was no more than 5 minutes.
I am left disheartened and not reassured as I was under the impression I would be having a scan to look for anything that couldn't be seen/felt in a normal breast exam (my GP already did this). Ive had alot of lovely experiences at the RAH, but this has been disappointing.
