"Communication doesn't take that much time."

About: Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital / Accident & Emergency (Emergency Care)

(as a parent/guardian),

Our son was brought in after referral from our GP following taking two seizures and constantly throwing up between lethargic sleep. Given he is only 17 months old. You would hope initial assessments would be priorities by the Dr. The nurses were all excellent checking his basic obs, but outside of this we arrived at 17:00 and  by 22:30 he had still not been seen by the Dr.

One Dr had come to get the background and carry out examination but was called away before the examination. Not a problem as people need to be handled in order of priority. However we are told they would finished their check when they were done. This was not done and Dr was AWOL since then, just seen occasionally passing the corridor.

My son was waiting for an EEG but they won't even start that ball rolling until the Dr's examination is initially done. We found the wait and nurse checks are a waste of resource and time for all parties.

The information we were given has been exceptionally poor with no guidance on timeliness and sequence of events despite raising and asking the questions.

I understand that everyone is busy but communication doesn't take that much time and the lack of it just leads to further stress and anxiety.

I am sorry to hear that you had such a long wait to see the relevant medical staff for your child. When your child is unwell it is a scary time for you all and I understand your frustrations at the delay in being seen.

I was pleased to hear that the nurses were undertaking observations to ensure your child was safe while they waited.

If you would like us to look into your specific case in more detail please e-mail me on sue.danby@nhs.scot with your child's name and DOB and we can make a more individualised response.

Kind Regards

Sue Danby
