"Chronic pain and fatigue"

About: Adult Health & Support Services / Occupational Therapy

(as a service user),

I previously suffered from over active thyroid and had radioactive therapy a number of years ago. I now have an under active thyroid and take medication. It took time to get the correct dosage for this medication. Around 2 years ago the pain and fatigue was getting worse and may medication was adjusted for my thyroid. This did not assist with the symptoms and the dosage was again reduced as blood tests confirmed my thyroid level was too high. In March 2024 I was admitted to hospital with suspected stroke, but this was later to be confirmed that I was suffering from Hemifacial spasms.

The pain or the fatigue was not getting better and was affecting my daily like. I was feeling low and didn’t want to do anything. I reduced my working hours to see if this helped. I was then prescribed anatriptyline but this made me feel drowsy in the morning. GP the prescribed Nortriptyline which help with the pain and reduced the spasms. My mood remained low and feel it was difficult to manage daily tasks. My GP then referred me to Occupational Therapy.

I attended 9 sessions with Kara over a period of 5 months. This has changed the way I manage my symptoms and given me back the confidence to do certain things I could not do. I have come to terms that things will not be the same but I can still manage certain elements of tasks just with a more planned approach.

Dear sunnc77,

Many thanks for taking the time to provide feedback regarding your experience of working alongside Kara, one of our primary care occupational therapists.

I am sorry to read of the pain and fatigue you have been experiencing over the last couple of years- it certainly sounds like you have been through a challenging journey. I am however glad that you have found occupational therapy support helpful in developing new ways to manage your symptoms and enable you to get back to doing some activities which are meaningful to you.

I will make sure to share this feedback with Kara and the wider team. We are always very grateful for all feedback provided, it really does mean a lot to our staff team.

May I take this opportunity to wish you well,

Amanda
