"Fit note"

About: 3/Springfield House Medical Practice

(as a service user),

I’m very disappointed with the way I was treated during my recent face-to-face appointment at this practice.

I’ve been dealing with a long-term condition that the practice is already aware of. In the past, I’ve been issued a fit note for the same condition with no issues. However, during this appointment, I was unexpectedly refused a proper fit note — even though my symptoms have clearly worsened and I now have a confirmed surgical plan in place. I explained to the GP that I currently sleep only 2–3 hours per night, often feel like I could fall asleep at any time during the day, and am physically and mentally unable to work in this condition.

Despite explaining this clearly and providing relevant documentation, the doctor told me that because I can walk and talk, I should still be able to do some kind of work. I found this response dismissive and inappropriate, considering the seriousness of my condition and the clear medical advice from my specialist.

The symptoms I’m dealing with have a direct impact on my daily life and work capacity. This wasn’t just overlooked, it felt completely invalidated.

I fully understand that GPs must assess each case carefully, but patients deserve empathy, consistency, and respect for medical evidence. I sincerely hope the practice reviews how it handles cases like mine and ensures that people with genuine health needs are treated seriously and supported, not judged based on superficial criteria like being able to “walk and talk”.
