"Under funding of pessary clinic"

About: South West Acute Hospital / Outpatient clinics

(as a service user),

My mother is in her 90s.  She attends a pessary clinic in SWA in Enniskillen.  Her appointment should, strictly, be every 3 months.

Her appointments were cancelled and rescheduled by the clinic 3 times leaving a 7 month gap.

As a result of the delay my mother is badly ulcerated internally.  Had she been seen at three months, this might not have happened.

Her rectal prolapse needs immediate attention.  An appointment to see a colorectal surgeon was requested in May. Still no word.

Why does my elderly mother have to suffer unnecessarily?

Given her age and circumstances, why is she not an urgent case.  I hate to see my mother suffer.  It’s very unfair.

Please help.

Dear Disguntled user,

My name is Maureen Flanagan and I am the Senior Nurse of the outpatients Department in the South West Acute Hospital.

Firstly I want to thank you for sharing your mother's experience with us. I am sorry to read about the long wait within the pessary clinic. I have shared your story with the staff in the department.

There can be a long wait for this clinic due to the increased demand and we apologise for the inconvenience this can cause. As the nursing staff do not organise or schedule appointments for this clinic, I have shared this story with the booking team.

You may find it beneficial to link with the booking team on 02882833666. You may also find it useful to check waiting times through "Waiting Times | Western Health & Social Care Trust" if you mother is waiting on further treatment. You may also wish to link with your mothers’ consultant's secretary who may be able to advise further on the surgical aspect of her care as unfortunately due to the anonymity of Care Opinion feedback I am unable to advise in more detail.

I hope this response has been useful

Kind regards,

Senior nurse Maureen Flanagan

Outpatients Department.

SWAH
