"My sleep journey and how I won"

About: Royal Surrey County Hospital / General medicine

(as the patient),

A bit about me. I am in my 50s, and when I started the menopause at 47 which was a shock I had real problems sleeping, not because of hot flashes, just couldn’t sleep. So my Dr prescribed Zopiclone; this was the start of an 8 year dependence. Fear of not sleeping was giving me anxiety and for years it was my night time routine. Life happened, downward spirals and emotional problems just made it worse, but I told myself last year this has to change.

I was referred to Louise at the Insomnia clinic, but on our first call I was actually getting unwell. Strangely enough after being unwell for 4 days I stopped taking them. I think I had a realisation that I didn’t need them, that I could sleep, so I carried on, kept up with my calls with Louise and now I can say 6 months later I sleep like a baby.

Was it knowing I was getting help or being unwell which changed my mindset, maybe both but I did it.

So now here I am not waking up groggy, just glad I can sleep… see you can do it!
