"There was no dignity, privacy or rest"

About: University Hospital Monklands / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

I had initially arrived at another A&E with my daughter who had a post operative tonsillectomy haemorrhage. She was stabilised there and blue lighted to Monklands.

We had been advised she would be admitted to the ENT ward for close observation, however we arrived at A&E and advised there was no beds. She then spent 12 hours on a bed in a makeshift ward in the corridor. She was there alongside 4 other patients waiting to be admitted.

The staff were wonderful but it is simply not sustainable for them. They were trying to manage A&E patients as well as those waiting to be moved. My daughter went from potentially undergoing emergency surgery to being left in a bed. There was no dignity, privacy or rest in this area. People shouting across corridors in the middle of the night and lights brightly shining.

Again this is not the staff's fault at all and I know they feel it is far from ideal. I just wish there was a way of better managing the service. The staff tried so hard to provide care. One member of staff on the day shift was lovely and attentive when we needed anything at all, but I was horrified at the situation with beds.

Thank you for taking the time to provide us with your feedback, which is greatly appreciated. Firstly, I hope that your daughter is now well and making good progress.

I sincerely apologise for the experience both you and your daughter had when you attended the Emergency Department, which I can wholly appreciate would have contributed to the stress of the situation you found yourselves in. Thank you for acknowledging the efforts of the ED staff in these circumstances. I will share your comments with my colleagues in ED, so please be assured that these will be reflected upon.

Once again, thank you for sharing your experience.

Best wishes
