"Never acknowledged anyone"

About: St John's Hospital / Accident & Emergency St John's Hospital / Cardiology St John's Hospital / Medical Assessment Unit

(as a parent/guardian),

My son was taken by ambulance to St John’s hospital Livingston after collapsing in a chemist, after going  to see them about a rash.

He was taken to A&E overnight, then moved to ward 23. At this point still no info on what was going on, all they done was kept taking bloods and being told his infection markers were seriously high.

After a couple days they gave him athletes foot cream and zero base cream to put on his inflamed blistered skin, firstly giving a patient creams to apply when they don’t know what is wrong with him, secondly you don’t put zero base on blistered inflamed skin and these people are in the medical profession.

He was eventually started on an IV antibiotic, which made his symptoms worse, myself and my son had said that it was getting worse but both of us were dismissed. I had to find staff to ask about my son  and that was a task, they never gave my son any updates on what the plan was.

He was moved to ward 21, which wasn’t any better, again staff just walked by never acknowledged anyone, doctor eventually came to look at my son, which he informed that that was the first time anyone had looked at him. I managed to speak to doctor who was very nice, and was the only person that gave us information and she mentioned waiting on the swab results, he hadn’t had any swabs taken, and that photos of his skin would be sent to dermatology, which they said they wanted to take biopsies on the Monday due to transport issues this never happened until the Tues, another day wasted.

There is so much to mention it would take me hours to write, I feel the care he has been given is not acceptable.

I'm sorry to read your account of your sons recent visit to hospital. I know the staff plan to keep patients fully informed of their care as they transition through the hospital.

If your son would like his case looked into in more details to investigate what happen then I would recommend contacting the Patient Experience Team.
