About: Maternity care / Labour suite maternity Maternity care / Maternity care (Ward 31)

(as the patient),

I can’t fault the midwives looking after us throughout our pregnancy as they were fantastic, however I do feel my feedback needs to be heard in regarding to my labour in Paisley Hospital!

We were told the baby was weighing bigger than average and that would be best to induce the baby two weeks earlier to reduce any complications in labour, we had a sonographer who said the baby was breach and was booked for a doctor to move the baby. We were told plan for a c section in case the baby went into difficulties while being moved.

After fasting and going into the hospital, the midwife checked and said they could feel two heads, then the doctor came in with the scan machine and said baby was not breached but wants to keep me in to monitor me.

I was left in a room on my own and was told I need to be monitored for 48 hours just to make sure baby doesn’t turn back again. When my husband asked was their a possibility that the sonographer got it wrong as the baby is not breach, the doctor said well the scans can’t be wrong in a way we found rude. Any time he asked them questions about what is the next step he was made feel like it was nothing to do with him, and was ignored by a few people in the hospital.

I was then told they needed the room back and that I was ok to go home the next morning, to which my husband was not happy about as I was told I needed 48 hour monitoring. We then went to book induction, to which I was told they had no availability until the week after we were meant to be induced, as recommended by the consultant, but due to the baby not being breach we were now booked for a later date.

We arrived for 11am and was not seen until 3pm to which the balloon was inserted, we were told from the consultant that my husband could stay that we would have our own room as we live to far away. After 5 hours the balloon fell out and I informed the staff and no one showed up until 3 hours later to check if I was dilated to which I was.

Then the staff changed over and the new staff told my husband to leave and we said it should be on our notes as we were told we would have our own room and have to stay due to living so far away. The nurse/midwife moved us to a room. After being woke every few hours to check the baby we were then told we had the leave the room by a new member of staff, I then informed them nope check our notes we were told that we need to stay and this is what we are doing as we are waiting to be sent down to the labour ward!

After spending 3 nights in a room with no one communication with us we had to demand to speak to someone as the balloon had worked yet no one was keeping my cervix opened and the whole point of being in two weeks early was for the health of the baby and me! Finally a midwife came and tried to do a sweep, to which she could not feel the baby’s head as the baby had moved across my stomach due to what I feel was neglect from the hospital, as I was just left there. Due to this I was told to fast and wait to be called for a C section.

I had told everyone in that hospital that I had given birth naturally to my first child and that all I needed was my waters to be broke as the balloon worked, but due to being left in the room it was pointless. The C section went well and the staff doing the procedure were amazing, they really kept me at ease as I tried everything to avoid this but was let down by the hospital and had no choice!

I would love to know what would have happened if my child’s hand did come down and bring on labour when I was left in the room as that could of happened, this is very frustrating as everything was going to plan until I was left there for 3 days.

Then my recovery after the C section was awful. I was left in the recovery room overnight with a midwife who was heavily pregnant and I felt I could not ask for help. The next day I was told I could go home and then after spending the whole day sitting around waiting to be discharged, we were not discharged until 10pm that night, which is absolutely ridiculous with a newborn, also the staff knew we lived very far away from the hospital as it would of been on our records! We didn’t get home until 12pm with a newborn and recovering from a c section which should of been avoided.

I also seen on my badger notes that the induction had failed, this was due to the hospital not due to the induction as that worked and the baby was ready but due to being left for 3 days. If the hospital does not have the staff for induction then they should not be booking them in or leaving people book C sections as these should only be available for emergencies!

Dear Stedr87

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. I’m very sorry to hear that, while you felt well supported by the midwives throughout your pregnancy, your labour and postnatal care did not meet the standard expected.

These are not the experiences we want any family to have. I want to assure you that your feedback is being taken seriously and will be shared with the teams for review. It’s important that we learn from your experience to improve our care, communication, and planning for future families.

If you are willing, I would encourage you to contact me on the email below to review your care

Kindest Regards,

Laura Flynn
