"Disorganised and very slow"

About: Antrim Area Hospital / Accidents & Emergency Antrim Area Hospital / Minor Injuries Unit Dalriada Urgent Care

(as a relative),

Rang dalriada and was informed to attend antrim hospital, assessed and told to go straight to a&e due to urinary retention. (Twocd and discharged the day prior as attended 3days before with urgency to pee and treated for bladder infection).

It took 2hours to be reviewed in minors while in excruciating pain from not being able to urinate. (6pm) Bladderscan done by nurse and informed patient 1400mls in bladder. Took 1hour to have a catheter inserted for same (7pm), patient pacing the hall bearing teeth through the pain. Only when family member had to intervene amd speak to the Dr stating he needed a catheter right away did they eventually listen and act accordingly- very grateful of help at that time. 1litre in bladder drained. No legstraps applied to legbag when it eventually was attached.

1hour later observations taken, systolic 90mmhg. They informed us had to wait to see blood results, blood results came back at 10pm and said happy for discharge. Had to ask for catheter pack- which when handed consisted of 1 legbag and 1nightbag. No further supplies- so again had to ask nurse would need full supply including catheters as district nursing wouldnt have that to hand if they needed in scenario of a blocked catheter.

Observations were not checked again prior to discharge.

Disorganised and very slow.

Dear blackbirdish39

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback to the department.

I will provide a copy of your feedback to both the medical and nursing staff. It is important that we try to priorities patient pain and I am sorry this did not happen on your visit.

Catheter care bundles should be provided to all patients on their discharge
