"My son admitted his addiction during lockdown"

About: Parent Support Link

(as a parent/guardian),

When my son told me he had a ket addiction in July 2020 we felt alone and helpless and as it was around lockdown we felt isolated. I was given the helpline to call and thank god I called it. Karen spoke to me and we arranged an online meeting where we were supported so much and made to feel that we weren’t alone. Initially we had weekly online sessions which were priceless.

I’d go as far as saying Karen possibly saved our marriage as I’m not sure we’d have got through it without her.

5 years on (to the day!!) my son has been clean and relapsed and has now been clean for 7 months but I know if i needed help I could ring Karen and she’d be there. I’ve dipped in and out the service as and when I’ve needed it and my son did a share with other parents which was so helpful and eye opening but this charity is paramount to parents who are suffering. I would tell any parent suffering to get in touch get supported and ask for help.

Thank you so much for sharing your journey, your honesty and strength are incredibly powerful. It’s clear how deeply you care for your son and how committed you’ve been throughout such a difficult time. I’m so glad you found support when you needed it most, and that Karen and the service were there to walk alongside you.

Five years is no small milestone, and it’s inspiring to hear that your son has come so far. Even through relapse, the resilience both of you have shown is amazing. It’s also beautiful that he was able to give back by sharing his story with other carers, that kind of peer support can make such a difference.

Thank you again for speaking so openly. You’re a reminder to others that they are never alone, and that support is out there, even when things feel at their darkest.
