"NHS 111 service"

About: South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust / NHS 111

(as a service user),

I recently had occasion to contact NHS 111. I had a recurring health condition that started to manifest on Friday evening, after the GP services had closed for the weekend. I was in a small dilemma as to whether to wait until Monday to speak to the GP or try to get help via NHS111.

Opting to try the 111 service I rang. The initial rigmarole is a little daunting and could be a little difficult if you were confused or nervous especially around having to provide your exact location.

Anyway once I got to speak to a local call handler the process went very smoothly. We went through the normal question and answer session and after a short pause I was advised that an out of hours GP service would call me back.

This happened within half an hour and after a discussion with the GP she advised that someone wouold be with me soon. Within another half an hour  the Integrated Urgent Care Service vehicle turned up and the GP I had spoken to came in an examined me and prescribed and gave me the appropriate medication.

This was all the more impressive as I was away from home in a holiday park some distance from any population centre. The route is centainly not motorway by any stretch of the imagination.

I can only say that I was very impressed with the response and also with the people at NHS111 who dealt with me and the GP who responded. The service received was very good. Excellent 5 star rating
