"Left in pain after surgery for over a year"

About: Bradford Royal Infirmary / General surgery

(as a service user),

Last March I had a hernia repair and a part removed from a gastric band, unfortunately 1 week later I contracted Shingles and developed Ramsay Hunt Syndrome. The tubing was left in my stomach laying along the base of my stomach causing me a lot of pain, I also thought my band had been removed, it wasn’t.

I was referred back for surgery in November 24 agreed to do it Feb 25. The pain I have is terrible at times. I was admitted for surgery mid July 25 gowned up waited over 4 hours only to be sent home. I suffer with anxiety and have been struggling my next date was a week later which has been cancelled, my next date maybe early August.

It’s bad enough been in pain and anxious but to be cancelled like this is really affecting my mental health, life is bad enough with Ramsay Hunt Syndrome but coping with this pain is awful

Hi, My name is Catherine and part of my role is responding to posts on Care Opinion.

Thank you for taking the time to post your feedback, I am very sorry to hear of your complications after surgery and contracting shingles and Ramsay Hunt Syndrome.

This has all been a very difficult time for you especially if your pain has not been controlled.

I am really sorry to hear that your surgery was cancelled in mid July at very short notice, after you had waited for four hours to go to theatre.

This is not the experience we aim to provide for our patients, without more details, I can only assume that this was due to an urgent case taking priority on the day. I am sorry if you were not given an explanation for the late cancellation and for the additional anxiety you experienced.

Our new Day Surgery Unit at St. Luke's Hospital is due to open soon and this should allow patients to receive their surgery sooner, which will hopefully expedite your treatment.

Please contact our Patient Experience Service (PALs) if you would like us to investigate your experience on 01274 364810 or by emailing patient.experience@bthft.nhs.uk.

As a Trust we strive to provide a high level of care and patient well being and value all feedback, positive or negative, as a way to drive improvements to our services.

Your feedback will be shared with the senior Surgical Management Team.

Kind regards

Catherine Healy
