My husband’s story.
My husband came into A&E at the QEUH due to chest pain prior to a planned procedure for his tonsils with chest pain and shortness of breath.
He was immediately triaged and admitted to majors and attached to monitoring. His heart rate climbed to above 190bpm and he was rushed to resus following an ECG.
The consultant, Geri was immediately on him and started medication to reduce his heart rate. Following a CT scan, he was admitted to CCU. We had been told possible bad news and prepared for this. The next day, he had an echo which showed issues with his heart, this was dealt with on the ward with an urgent drain. The medical and nursing staff kept us informed throughout.
His drain unfortunately blocked the next day and it was sorted, thanks to his continuous monitoring and the vigilance of the nursing staff.
On the Saturday, he became critically unwell, requiring transfer to the GJNH. The ICU medics at the QEUH kept me informed with the entire process. It was a scary time as he was critically unwell.
When I got to the GJNH, I was informed that he had to go to theatre immediately, they let me stay in a family room overnight whilst he was in theatre. The nurse overnight came to tell me he made it through and that I could see him. The staff in ICU were so accommodating and made sure I could see him. The nurses in ICU were amazing, Rhuidh, Ray, Grace, Chloe, Sandi, in ICU. Transferred to HDU and the lovely staff in there took over, Lauren, Hattie, and all the nurses, I’m sorry I can’t remember you all. You were all so accommodating and understood my anxieties with my husband and his care.
He got better and was transferred to 3 East. His nurse Debbie was amazing!!! She listened and made sure he was comfortable. He unfortunately had a set back and had a flying visit to HDU but made a recovery! He has been home a couple of months and I can’t thank you all for saving his life.
Thank you to everyone at QEUH ED and Resus, CCU 5, GJNH ICU 2, HDU 1, 3 East, ICU 2. Thank you to Dr Bilancia and team.
