"No ongoing support following diagnosis"

About: Children's Specialist Health Services / Neurodevelopmental Service (NDS)

(as a parent/guardian),

After a 4.5 year wait my daughter has been seen by the neurodevelopment team and has been given an autism diagnoses.

Both Niamh and Rachel were really lovely and were great with my daughter and what was initially a difficult diagnoses to accept they made easier and were happy to answer any questions.

Although the initial wait was long once she had reached the top of list assessment to diagnoses has been quick and thorough.

It's just unfortunate there is no ongoing support following diagnosis from the team as having a link person who you could chat with would make things easier longer term, I appreciate how stretched the service is etc but it's daunting walking away from the appointment thinking nothing has really changed she has a diagnosis but the support moving forward isn't there.

Niamh and Rachel are an asset to the team and made this whole journey easier to accept.

Dear Parent,

Thank you for your feedback and positive comments on two of our clinicians; Niamh and Rachel. I will pass this on.

I am glad your daughter has now completed her neurodevelopmental assessment and hopefully this gives you and her some understanding.

I acknowledge your comments on the service being unable to provide long term supports. As you are aware we have a lengthy waiting list for assessment and diagnosis and unfortunately do not have capacity within this part of the service for ongoing support. As you will know we offer a range of Parent Workshops that can provide support for the common challenges, which you can continue to access. Our Social Media also provides lots of advise and strategies which may give you some support. We also try to link you with local and national groups.

We are hopeful that in time, our service may be able to offer additional resources to families.

Thank you for your feedback.

If you would like to discuss this further please contact me directly on 01698 687490.

Best regards,

Suzanne Shields
