"Amazing life-saving care from all staff"

About: Crosshouse Hospital / Maternity care

(as the patient),

In April 2025 I went into labour with my second daughter. I had a planned C-Section booked for the following week so I was taken into surgery as an emergency C-Section which I was told saved my life.

Our baby was born and we quickly realised something was going wrong with me but we were reassured by the anaesthetist. Within minutes of our daughter being born we were told that I had began to haemorrhage and this meant there would be more people coming into the operating room and lots of alarms going off, but again, we were reassured that this happens and they had it under control. Unfortunately shortly after this, the spinal that I had been given before the operation began, had started to wear off and I began to feel pain so I was very quickly put under general anaesthesia.
Whilst under anaesthesia, the surgeons struggled to stitch my womb together and I suffered a blood loss of just under 2.5L so I received blood transfusions to replace my blood loss. Once I had been stitched together again, I was taken to high dependency to recover where I was able to hold our daughter for the first time.
Unfortunately, I had another small bleed whilst in recovery but the fast reaction from the midwife (I’m sorry I’ve forgotten her name) meant that the bleeding was stopped very quickly. The pressure put on my belly when she was trying to stop the bleeding caused a lot of pain and due to this I was put on a morphine driver.
Once on the driver, the pain was very quickly under control however, just a short time later I suffered a terrifying anaphylactic reaction to the morphine. Again, the fast actions of the midwife saved my life as she called a lot of doctors and the anaesthetist who administered adrenaline and nebulisers which brought the reaction under control.
My experience was an extremely scary one however, the team who looked after me never showed any fear on their faces and kept reassuring us the whole time. I will be forever grateful to every single person who was there that day. I have two young children and a husband-to-be who I’ll be marrying later this year and if it wasn’t for the fast responses from all the people involved in my care that day, I wouldn’t be here today.

Dear February01

Firstly congratulations on the birth of your baby. I hope you are both doing well. Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience with us. This must have been an anxious time for you and I am so pleased to hear that the team around you supported and reassured you. Complications as you describe are a common part of labour and birth and our teams are trained to detect and act on them as they occur. I will ensure your lovely message is passed on to them and they will appreciate hearing from you.

I wish you and your family the best of ongoing health and thank you again for reaching out to us

Best Wishes

Attica
