"Staff were kind, caring and compassionate"

About: Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Acute Medical Initial Assessment

(as the patient),

I was admitted to ward 101 at 10am. I was first seen in ward 101 after seeing my own GP that morning, Initial bloods taken etc very quickly, Sugar levels very low so dealt with in a calm professional manner.

My heart rate was elevated to above 150bpm (one of the reasons GP wanted me checked). I was then asked to sit on a chair whilst they hooked me up to fluids and antibiotics, I have Fibromyalgia, I was fatigued, lacked energy, had a pounding headache, but still I was left sitting on a chair and was told next free bed would be mine. Anyways, the HCSW suggested I go to room 5 as there was a comfier chair in there for me that reclined, I was so very grateful for this.

Once in there, a consultant came to see me and said they wanted a CT scan done. Fair enough, it was now 1:30pm and still no bed, despite me seeing beds being washed and new people into them. I started to vomit so requested assistance. I was taken for my CT scan at 5:15pm. At this point I said to the nurse look am in agony sitting on that chair, I'll happily lie in a bed in the corridor if it was to relieve the pain from being in a chair all day.

When I returned from my CT scan, still no bed, I felt at this time age was maybe playing a factor and fact I was independent so didn't need any supervision for falls etc, Anyway, give them their due ,they moved a bed into room 5 for me at 6pm, 8 hours after I arrived.

The consultant arrived and said my CT scan was showing inflammation of bowel but I was well enough to go home. I burst into tears at this point and said I disagreed with them as I lived alone and the night before I had passed out etc, Their response was there is no beds in the entire hospital for you, as they were there I started vomiting again, cue them going away coming back 5 mins later saying they had a bed on the ward for me and I would be going to ward 103.

Massive well done to the staff in AMIA 101 - they were kind, caring and compassionate. Ruth the nurse who looked after me and her team of HCSW Hazel and Lorna, 5 star service, thank you .
