"Anterior Cruciate Ligament knee issues"

About: Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital (Wonford) / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as the patient),

I was first referred to Royal Devon and Exeter by my current specialist in Somerset, It was a fair wait between referral and hearing from RDE but once they had made contact with me it was go go go! The speed at which I had my first consultation to my operation date was within 2-3 months which was amazing, I met with my Consultant Vipul, he was lovely, honest and explained everything in great detail and took into account my own thoughts and feelings. I then went on to have, X-rays, MRI and CT scan all done within a timely manner. I received a phone call asking if I’d like my operation in July I was In shock and was so happy to know that it was going to happen this side of the year.

Every single member of staff that I saw was compassionate, kind and caring. From the radiology teams, to the pre-op clinic to the anaesthetists and surgical teams everyone was giving 10/10! They made me feel reassured and relaxed. When coming around from my operation I was put onto the Dyball ward, being the youngest patient there was a bit scary at first, but again the staff were phenomenal, I did get emotional a couple of times, being over an hour away from home meant that my family found it hard to visit me, but the nurses consoled and were so caring, also to mention that I did indeed make friends with many other patients whilst there. All the staff from the doctors to nurses to HCAs, physios (absolutely phenomenal, sorry for fainting) and the tea and coffee people they were all amazing and this should be recognised! I also wanted to mention the trainee nurses on their uni placements, you will go far! And smash your degree!! Please remember this!!

And finally I have to say a MASSIVE thank you to Vipul and his team for wonderful surgery and treatment 10/10! I am still in recovery and continue to visit Exeter and await another surgery in a years time and have no qualms whatsoever!

RDE, you are a credit to our NHS!

Thank you so much!

I am responsible for monitoring overall service delivery, and the day to day running of both departments. I work closely with the Orthopaedic Consultants, Radiologists, Therapists, Trauma Nurse Practitioners, Orthopaedic Practitioners and Nursing staff to ensure cohesive care is delivered. I am very fortunate to have a dedicated team of staff, who work extremely hard to ensure patient safety is maintained, and that clinics run as smoothly as possible.

Dear Jad27,

This is such a fantastic story regarding your experience with the Trauma & Orthopaedic service within the RDUH-Eastern, thank you for taking the time to share it.

We are still working on trying to improve our waiting times for initial appointments, however I am glad to hear that once you had your appointment in Orthopaedic Outpatients with Mr Mandalia that it was all systems go after that!

We all strive to try and ensure that patients are treated with compassion, kindness and dignity and I am pleased that this was evident in in all stages of your care/treatment.

I will ensure that I pass on your positive feedback to Mr Mandalia and his team, in addition to my nursing staff in PEOC OPD.

Wishing you a continued smooth recovery from surgery.

Kind regards,

Julia King
