"They made me feel as though it was all my own fault"

About: East Ayrshire Community Hospital / Trauma & orthopaedics

(as the patient),

I believe that nursing staff told lies on my ward reports, now lost all trust in the NHS. Along with the complaints team at the hospital, they all made me feel as though it was all my own fault.

I’ve tried going through all available channels to get my story heard. From the get go it has been a mess -  waited 10 years for a knee replacement , from the GP, who asked me what I was doing in Scotland, to the consultant keeping me waiting 45 min on an outpatient appointment. When I went to the pre-op all went well until the anaesthetist didn't show up, anaesthetist not turning up until I was in the anti room to the theatre,  then they told me what they were doing, no choice, when they asked me to shrink as the template wouldn’t fit so all that happened was nothing, leg could still move and they gave a GA.

When I came around, I was unable to pass water, hasn’t happened before also next day, when some feeling came into my half of my was sort of burning, when I told the nurse they told me it was because I was allergic to the type of plaster being used. I was and still exactly the same after nearly two years, now been told it’s nerve damage still causing sleepless nights.

According to my ward reports, I opened my bowels every day  which isn't true. I told them that codine gave me constipation, so from the day I went into hospital until I came home that’s the way it happened. In my ward reports it says that I refused medication, which is also not true. It also doesn't say that they gave me an enema.

The consultant kept me waiting for 3/4 of a hour, I got to the waiting room early as I am a carer for my wife so I had arranged for someone to come and sit with her so I knew she would be ok. When 8:50 am came, I saw the consultant arrive and they left me sitting while they met with someone.  3/4 hour later, I was just about to leave and my name was called , now when I said to the complaints department about the wait they got back to me by phone 2 weeks later saying the consultant was doing paperwork during that time, which I don't believe to be true.

That was the last time I saw the consultant as said to them that I felt abandoned. They then said that they would send me to the chronic pain unit .  waited 9 months to get an appointment for that. When I got the appointment I went along and everyone was treated to a short presentation about pain.  I was the only male in a group of twenty, so I rethought that we would get even a 10 min appointment with a nurse , physio  and therapist, but no, waited another 5 weeks for an appointment.

I went along, felt really positive about the doctor and they were going to get me some physio and prescribed a capsicum cream, so the prescription was sent to the pharmacy, it has now been a month, still haven’t arrived and still no physio.

Have been told by the ombudsman, exactly the same report as the hospital sent, in fact it’s word for word, so that’s a dead end as once again here. So I thought the nurses complaints have been the next port of call,  but no they once again have come back saying that the nurse on ward was up to standard.

Dear Disappointted Ayrshire

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us via Care Opinion.

I am very sorry to read about the situation you have described. Please be assured that this is not the person-centred care that we aim to provide.

I would normally suggest raising issues such as these with our Complaint’s Team, but I can see that you have had contact with them already. I am sorry that your experience has not been a positive one and you were made to feel as though it was all your own fault.

It is difficult for us to look into specific concerns raised in this way as Care Opinion is completely anonymous. We do however value all feedback on our Services and I will ensure your comments are passed to the different Service Managers so that your experience can be shared more widely for reflection and learning.

Please accept my best wishes and thank you once again for taking the time to acknowledge your care experience.

Kind Regards

Pamela

Update posted by Disappointted Ayrshire (the patient)

It alright for you to sit there and come away with these comments it not you who has been made to feel that you are not believed and what they did was to treat my age, not the person The real truth is how many older people have been treated the same. When it comes down to it the nurses either told the truth or they didn’t, what chance is there of them admitting that they didn’t do the best job they could as I’ve said from the beginning, also it makes me wonder how am I supposed to trust anyone from the nhs. I have now sent all my hospital records to MNC how can I prove a negative the only thing is if I opened my Bowels everyday why did they prescribe an emena that still wasn’t recorded.

I have another knee that requires surgery, the other thing is I am caregiver to my wife iam in so much pain from the original op what happens to both of us ( Ihave to get up every night at 20 -30. Then again at 02-30 and again at 6-30 to take her to the toilet as well as all looking after her, cooking, cleaning, and washing so my days are hard work and I haven’t a day off for over two years, I was looking after my wife 3 days after I came out of hospital following my knee replacement,
