I had an appointment at the Muscular Skeletal Unit today. I had to collect injections from the hospital pharmacy and had to wait 30 minutes, only to be told the particular medication was unavailable. Having been taken off the said drug in tablet form prior I was quite perturbed. I suffer with rheumatoid arthritis and it's very important I have this drug on a weekly basis. I informed the pharmacy of this and did say that I felt it was unacceptable, they should have looked at my Rx sent through from the Consultant and ordered the drugs accordingly. The staff said they had requested a supply 9 days ago but it still hadn't arrived. Surely this should have been chased up earlier?
I was unsure of what to do next and became upset and overwhelmed. I had to be observed by a nurse injecting myself for the first time on the MSU unit (this was the whole point of my appointment).
I went back to the MSU and a fabulous nurse called Michelle gave me a quiet space with her to discuss my concerns. Michelle listened and let me speak. Gave me reassurances that they had the injection on the unit and would get the on call Dr to issue a Rx.
I went for a coffee at her suggestion and returned 20 minutes later.
Michelle had sorted it all out and we proceeded in completing the task of her observing me using the injection. Michelle allayed all my fears and I felt fully supported. She talked me through the process and periodically checked in case I had any questions or queries. Michelle gave me all of the information I required and she went at my pace. I didn't feel rushed or hurried at all. What a wonderful nurse she is!!
"What a wonderful nurse!"
