I am in my 70s. I broke my right hip towards the end of April. They wanted to take me to A&E in London but I persuaded them to put me on the 8:30 train to Billingshurst where my wife met me with the car and took me to A&E in Guildford, our closest hospital - and where my elbow had been rebuilt after a car accident several decades ago, and metalwork from that had been taken out in February 2020. So I had every trust in the Guildford orthopaedic department - with good reason, as events proved!
Mr Jaffa fitted me with a new hip early May and then the physio showed me how to walk and go up and down steps safely. I did the regular exercises in the book and started walking in our garden, beginning to walk without the use of the stick for the first time in mid May and kept increasing the distance, to 2km. Late May I changed to nordic walking poles, increasing the distance to 5km the next day and 9km by early June.
Seeing how well I was getting on, Mr Jaffa discharged me with some good advice in mid June. Now, although it's mid July I still can't put my sock on my right foot or tie my right shoelace, and I still can't pick things up with my right hand except with the long handled grabber that they gave me (though I can pick things up from the floor with my left hand).
But as long as I keep exercising, my right hip feels almost completely normal again and they have given me an email address to ask questions about next steps - such as how long the remaining minor niggles will last and when I can start riding my bicycle again and even, perhaps, using my rowing machine.
I am getting fantastic all round care from RSCH Guildford and am deeply, deeply grateful!
